Gout is a rheumatic condition where the kidneys do not properly excrete uric acid, causing it to accumulate in the blood and joints. Symptoms that arise include joint inflammation, kidney stones, and bursitis. Uric acid is produced from the breakdown of purines. One third of the uric acid from purines comes from food. The uric acid level can be further increased by accelerated cell breakdown. The body then produces more uric acid than normal. This occurs, for example, in cases of cancer, chemotherapy, overweight, and alcohol consumption.
If overweight, it is beneficial to lose weight to a healthy weight. Additionally, there are certain foods that should be avoided to reduce the risk of a gout attack. A healthy and varied diet with sufficient fluid intake is also advised. A dietitian can guide you in this.
